Setting Financial Goals You’ll Actually Reach

Last updated October 26, 2026 · Written by the Finpello team

“Save more someday” is hard to track. A goal with a clear dollar amount and a deadline tells you exactly what to do each week.

Make the goal specific

Decide the amount and the date. “$480 for a phone by February” is a goal. “Get a new phone” is a wish.

Divide it up

Divide the total by the number of months or weeks you have left to find how much to save each time. To find how long a goal takes, divide the total by what you can save each time.

Plan for costs you can see coming

A sinking fund is money you set aside a little at a time for a cost you already know is coming, like a yearly bill, a phone or holiday gifts. It’s different from an emergency fund, which is for surprises.

Try the numbers

Use the calculator to turn a goal into a monthly and weekly amount, or to see how long a goal takes at the amount you can save.

Try it

To finish in 6 months

about $38 a week

Saving $100 a month

10 months

Simple division, with no interest counted. Savings accounts may add a little interest, which would get you there slightly faster.
